William Charles Smith USMC Ret. Hammondsport: William Charles Smith, age 89, of Hammondsport, NY passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Thursday May 19, 2022 at Rochester General Hospital, in Rochester, N.Y.. Calling hours will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday June 25, at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, with Pastor Dale Eby officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in "Bill's" memory; may be made to any Veterans, Animal Rights, or Cancer Organization of the Donor's choice. William "Bill" Smith was born April 3, 1933 in Bath, NY, the son of the late Edward C. Smith Jr. and Olive Vivian (Hunt) Smith – Moore. He entered the U.S. Marine Corp on Jan. 28, 1953, and spent the next 28 years in the Corp.; he Honorably Retired on July 31, 1981. On Jan. 11, 2001 in Corning, NY he married the former Shirley Beatrice (Savage) Areford, and lived near the shores of Keuka Lake; she predeceased him on May 9, 2021. He is survived by Shirley's daughter who he loved as him own, Nicole A. Fazio of Walworth, NY; a grandson Lucas J. Ferren; a sister Nancy (Jerry S.) Langley; and a brother Wendell (Terry) Moore, both of Interlaken, NY, a brother Jim (Moley) Moore of Ovid, NY; and several nieces and nephews on both his side of the family and his wife's. Besides his parents and his wife, he was pre-deceased by 2 sisters Carolyn Bamburg in Dec. 31, 2005, Marilyn Vaness on Jan. 1, 1994; and a brother in law Ronald B. Savage on March 27, 2022.
