Peter Charles Schlappi

Dundee: Peter Charles Schlappi, 87, of Barrington NY passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on May 25th, 2026. Peter was born in Theresa, NY on March 22, 1939, he was the son of Charles Schlappi and Wanda (Knapp) Schlappi. He went to Evans Mills High School and graduated with a class of 11. He spent his early years farming and tree planting alongside his uncle Wilfred Knapp. Together they planted thousands of trees all over the Yates County area and beyond.

Together with Wilfred Knapp, they started a sawmill in Crystal Valley. They moved to Sturdevant Road in the Town of Barrington. In 1956, Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Company was formed, expanding the business to a retail store where it remained until 1980. They had purchased the Keuka Lumber Company on Lake Street in Penn Yan, and built a new retail store along with many lumber barns expanding it to where it is today with the fourth generation still a part of the business.

Peter retired at age 62, and he and his wife Patricia went on many wonderful trips, including Switzerland, Australia, Africa, Ireland, France, New Zealand, Eastern and Western Caribbean, Fiji, Alaska, Hawaii, Austria, Germany, The Panama Canal, England, and numerous trips within the United States. Pete and Pat spent many days going to Bobs Lake in Canada to their fishing cabin they owned with brother Carl, relaxing and fishing for many many hours.

He was a Boy Scout leader in the 1970’s, and a long-time member of the Masonic Temple in Dresden. He served on the Genesee Reserve Board of lumber retailers for many years. He was a man of character, honesty, and moral values.

Peter was predeceased by his parents and his son, Thomas Charles Schlappi. He is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Tammy (Steve) Perry, Susan (Ron) Dubeau, and stepsons Jeff (Gina) Hilton and Greg (Lisa) Hilton. Grandchildren Brent (Mary) Perry, Dale (Kim) Perry, Leah Hodge, Shelby (Randy) Heintz, Kyle Dubeau, Katy Schlappi, and Meghan Schlappi, step-grandchildren Garrett Hilton, Levi Hilton, Keria Hilton and Calum Hilton, and 10 great-grandchildren, all who adored him. Siblings Carl (Opal) Schlappi, Linda Jackson, and Sylvia (Peter) Mills.

Family will receive friends on Friday, May 29th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, NY 14837; where a Masonic service will be held at 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 11:00am at the Barrington Community Church, 4560 Old Bath Road, Dundee, NY 14837.
