Upon leaving there he worked at Hancock Field in Syracuse as a mechanic on the A10 fighter planes that were housed there. He was a member of the Air National Guard while employed at Hancock. He also had been employed by trucking companies as a semi driver. For the past few years, George has been in ill health and has received care for his needs when outside the VA and the hospital, from his sons.
He is survived by his sons, Eric S. Kirkendall of Kirkville, NY, Jason (Susan) Kirkendall of Dundee; a daughter, Melissa (Matthew) Dolder of San Antonio, TX; 8 grandchildren, Joshua, Taylor, Alex, Gabriel, Dakota, Lucas, Amelia, and Anabelle; 2 sisters, Janis (Guy) Dove, of Gresham, Oregon, Ann (Charley) Cummings of Sidney, Montana; nieces Cristi, Sherry, Julie, and Jaclyn, and nephew Jeffrey.
He will always be remembered as an excellent mechanic for any type of motor that exists. His sons have fortunately inherited that skill from their father.
