Evelyn M. Symes Dundee: Evelyn M. Symes, age 87, of Dundee, NY died Monday September 22, 2014 at The Homestead, in Penn Yan, N.Y. Friends may call from 4-7 pm Thursday (Sept. 25) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday (Sept. 26) with Pastor Lew Ann Giles officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee. Memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., or the Dundee Baptist Church, 20 Seneca Street, Dundee, NY 14837. Evelyn was born October 3, 1926 in the Town of Tyrone, NY, the daughter of the late Lynn S. and Linda A. Crans Miller. She graduated from Dundee Central School in 1944. She started her working career at Markson Clothing Store right out of high school. On August 28, 1948 in the Dundee Baptist Church she married the late Walter J. Symes Sr.; who passed away on March 28, 2006. She has lived locally most all her life; having lived briefly in Arcade, and Filmore, NY and Mansfield PA., due to her husbands job. Starting their family in 1950, they returned to Dundee permanently in 1956. Once the children were all in school she returned to work, and was employed by Giles Family Store, Dundee, for 22 years retiring in 1985. Mrs. Symes was a very active member of the Dundee Baptist Church, having been a Sunday school teacher, and choir member; she was also a Past Noble Grand, and held many other offices in the Dundee Rebekah Lodge. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, but only when she wasn't reading. She is loved and will be dearly missed by 3 daughters Barbara L. (Edward) Besley of Himrod, NY, Bonnita L. (David) Walsh of Estero, FL, Bethany L. (Daniel) Sherman of Palmyra, NY; 1 son Walter John (Janice) Symes Jr. of Dundee; 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; 4 sisters Elinor (Donald) Webster of Dundee, Leila Voorhees of Nevada, OH, Alta (Harry) Ayers of Moore Haven, FL, Nelda Moss of West Wyoming, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
