Edward 'Ed' Gerard Burton
Penn Yan: Edward 'Ed' Gerard Burton , age 87, of Penn Yan, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at the Keuka Comfort Care Home in Penn Yan, NY after a battle with cancer.
Beloved husband of Lorna A. Burton, loving father of Deborah L. (Bill) Walters (deceased), Thomas W. (Gretchen) Burton, Donald Edward Burton (deceased). Connie (Paul) Bendick, Kim (Frank) Wangler. Cherished grandfather to eight and great-grandfather to ten. Edward was a proud U.S. Army veteran and former volunteer for the Branchport Fire Department. He was especially fond of his church community and loved to sing in the choir.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of His Life service at 11:00 am Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the Dundee United Methodist Church, 35 Water Street, Dundee, NY; with Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiating. A luncheon will be served for everyone in the church gold room following the service. Inurnment with Military Honors will be at 3:00 pm, in Bitley Cemetery, 164 West Lake Road, Branchport, NY.
Ed was born on May 12, 1939 in Rockville Centre, NY to Lucy A. and Gerard E. Burton. He grew up with two brothers, Gerard (deceased) and Charles (deceased). His favorite hobbies included childhood clamming on Hewlett Bay, singing, and out-running his brother, Charles. In 1957, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea as a vehicle mechanic before being honorably discharged as a Specialist three years later. In 1971, he began Burton Brothers Garage with his brother Jerry. The business was a staple in Branchport for over a decade.
In 1975, Ed married the love of his life, Lorna A. Tallman (Baldwin) from Branchport, New York. The wedding brought together two families, sometimes referred to as “The Brady Bunch.” Lorna’s two children, Connie and Kim were united with Ed’s three children Deborah, Thomas, and Donald. This family of seven squeezed into Lorna’s 1969 Cadillac as they enjoyed gathering with friends and family over the course of the kid’s high school years. The children worked together on the home they named “Brookside” and enjoyed hobby farming. For the next three decades, Ed and Lorna fully engaged in finding and repairing old houses. This was Ed's "best job ever" where Ed and Lorna became part of several communities and developed lasting friendships at each location.
Ed was the consummate storyteller. He often captured the room as he described (in detail) his shenanigans over the years to family and friends. These stories extended from his time In the U.S. Army, farming in Minnesota, Burton Brothers Garage, and home restorations. For Ed, there was always a story!
Ed's guiding principle was: "I always gave back more than I took" and "we're not going to do it, unless we do it right". His wish is to be remembered for the good he did.
